Medical Genetics Institute / GenRISKŪ Adult Genetics Program

Up to 10% of people have a family history that suggests an inherited risk to a life-threatening disease. The GenRISKŪ Adult Genetics Program at Cedars-Sinai is the only program in California that provides genetic risk assessment, for many common, chronic conditions such as:

  • Cancers of the breast, colon, uterus, kidney, brain, ovaries, skin (melanoma) and thyroid
  • Clotting disorders
  • Diabetes
  • Heart diseases
  • Stroke

Our services help you identify health risks that you may have inherited. They also include genetic testing, counseling and planning ways to prevent or manage the disease or diseases you may be at risk for. All of our services are confidential.

In addition to treating patients, we conduct groundbreaking research in genetics. For example, we discovered several new oncogenes that affect cancer cell growth. Our findings have helped people with leukemia and breast cancer. Through genetic manipulation, we developed a way to prevent and reverse blockage in the arteries. We're also researching the role of a gene that might affect plaque build-up in the arteries.
