Since 1989, the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center has earned wide respect among medical experts for its leading edge research and clinical trials as well as its commitment to excellence in patient care.

Blood and marrow transplants are used to replace cancerous cells with transplanted healthy blood, bone marrow or stem cells in one the newest and most aggressive procedures used in the battle against cancer.

Under the leadership of Michael Lill, MD, Medical Director of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at Cedars-Sinai, a multidisciplinary team of experts experts and specialists - including oncologists, pain management specialists, rehabilitation therapists, pharmacists, nutritionists and transfusion medicine specialists - provides comprehensive care to patients.

Both adults and children are treated through the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program. A comprehensive array of medical services is available through the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, including diagnosis, screening, pre-transplant preparation and education, post-discharge care, recovery and dietary counseling.

Patients entering the program remain under the care of the same doctor throughout treatment. Cedars-Sinai performs transplants of blood and marrow taken from the patient him or herself (autologous transplantation) as well as transplants from other people such as relative or matched donor (matched related allogeneic transplantation).

Patients benefit from a full range of support services such as the Cedars-Sinai HLA Typing Lab, which ranks in the top 10% of HLA facilities worldwide. The lab is responsible for performing donor/recipient crossmatching.

Patients who require radiation and/or chemotherapy benefit from the experts and world-class facilities provided at the Outpatient Cancer Center. Almost all radiation and chemotherapy can be done on an outpatient basis at the center.

The Blood and Marrow Transplant program at Cedars-Sinai has been leading the quest to find answers to the unsolved riddles of blood-related cancers such as leukemia. The program continues to lead the way to discoveries that can control and cure these diseases.
