Hypoplastic/Absent Thumb

Hypoplastic thumb is an anomaly in which thumb is underdeveloped, varying in degree from being slightly small with normal components to a floating thumb that has no function and is attached only by skin. In some cases the thumb is completely nonexistent (absent).

The Center for Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery offers a full range of surgical procedures for hypoplastic or absent thumb. Surgeons use leading-edge technology and world-class surgical techniques.

Treatment

The surgical procedure performed to correct hypoplastic or absent thumb depends on the degree of underdevelopment. Surgery may include tendon transfers, reconstruction of the ligaments or a pollicisation (removal of the floating thumb, followed by formation of a new thumb using an existing digit, usually the index finger).
