Fellowship Opportunities

The Minimally Invasive Urology Institute and Department of Surgery offers a fellowship in endourology, stone disease and laparoscopic urology. The fellowship is recognized by the Endourological Society. It is a two-year clinical and research fellowship providing comprehensive endourological training, including laparoscopic urologic surgery, robotic prostatectomy, advanced ureteroscopy and percutaneous surgery. Attention will also be focused on ESWL, laser technology, diagnostic urologic ultrasound and prostate treatments (i.e., TUNA, TUMT and TUEVAP). Fellowship applicants must have an understanding of the basic medical sciences relative to urologic conditions manageable with endourologic techniques, in the subspecialties of:

  • Stone disease and obstructive uropathy (including BPH)
  • Urologic oncology
  • Female urology
  • Renal transplantation
  • Pediatric urology

Under the directorship of Gerhard J. Fuchs, MD, FACS, the first year of the fellowship combines clinical (25%) and laboratory (75%) training, while the second year is devoted to clinical activities and advanced endoscopic and laparoscopic urologic training. A fully equipped animal laboratory is available for endoscopic, ureteroscopic, percutaneous and laparoscopic surgical training and research. The fellowship experience includes a large volume of surgical cases as well as dedicated time for research activities. Following completion of a standard five- or six-year urology residency, this fellowship participates in the national Match program administered by the Endourological Society.

If you are interested in applying for a fellowship with Dr. Gerhard J. Fuchs and would like to apply for interveiw consideration, you will need to apply directly to the Endourological Society. This can be done via the Internet at www.endourology.org, or you may contact the program coordinator directly.

The deadlines for the fellowship year can be found at www.endourology.org. Generally speaking, all applications must be made to the Endourological Society and then faxed to each program you are applying to individually. For the Cedars-Sinai fellowship, you will fax your application to the attention of Shannon Piazza at (310) 423-4711. Applications are generally due by April of the year preceeding the fellowhsip, match lists are generally due by July 1, and the match results are posted in mid-July of the year preceeding the fellowship.

After you have submitted your application to the Endourology Society you will also need to submit it to the Minimally Invasive Urology Institute's Program Coordinator, Shannon Piazza. You may do so via fax or mail to:

Minimally Invasive Urology Institute
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
Attn: Shannon Piazza
8635 W. Third St., Suite 1070
Los Angeles, CA 90048
Fax: (310) 423-4711

To be eligible for consideration, a candidate must be able to obtain a full California medical license. Due to the difficulty that foreign graduates face in obtaining a California license within the timeline required, this fellowship is currently open to U.S. and Canadian graduates only. Foreign graduates may be eligible for a research-only fellowship, subject to availability.

Submission of an application does not automatically guarantee an interview. You will be contacted directly if you are selected for formal interview.

Fellowship applicants who are invited for an interview with Dr. Gerhard J. Fuchs will spend a full day at the Minimally Invasive Urology Institute. The candidate will observe Dr. Fuchs' surgical cases to learn as much about our fellowship program as possible. The formal interview will take place between surgical cases. To allow for your presence in the operating room, current Cedars-Sinai Medical Center policy requires that you provide a recent negative TB test (not more than 12 months old).
