Parkinson's disease (PD) is a complex neurologic condition which can be mimicked by a variety of other movement disorders. Parkinson's disease and the atypical or Parkinson-like diseases share many similar symptoms but also have distinct differences which are vital to understanding disease process and direction of treatment. But treatment is not just about medications, so the conference will also focus on a variety of other strategies to improve functioning and overall quality of life while living with PD.
The conference will begin with a review of Parkinson¿s disease and atypical Parkinson disease symptoms, how a diagnosis is determined and the differences in treatment options. This will be followed by a presentation on how neurologic music therapy can help in the management of Parkinson's symptoms. The information will focus specifically on how rhythm improves mobility, speech, language, and cognitive skills related to Parkinson's disease.
The conference will conclude with two presentations related to maintaining emotional and spiritual wellbeing with a focus on the mind/body connection.
With guidance from a laughter yoga specialist everyone in the audience will have the opportunity to experience the power of laughter and gain a better understanding of the positive effects it has on mood and coping. Lastly a caregiver of someone with atypical Parkinson's will discuss her journey and what she learned along the way. Each presentation will be followed by a brief question and answer period.
If you or someone you know has Parkinson's or atypical Parkinson's disease, please plan to attend by clicking on the registration button below to register before October 12.
