ASHP-Accredited Residency in Pharmacy Practice

The Department of Pharmacy Services offers an accredited Residency in Pharmacy Practice. The purpose of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center's Residency in Pharmacy Practice is to provide the resident with one year of postgraduate advanced hospital practice experience. Residents achieve professional competence serving as members of a multidisciplinary healthcare team that provides direct patient care to a variety of patient populations during clinical rotations in inpatient practice, drug distribution, pharmacy management and primary care. Residents will develop teaching skills through inservices to the healthcare team and patients. They will exercise leadership in improving the safety of the medication-use system and develop problem-solving skills through participation in departmental and organizational initiatives. Residents will develop a commitment to life-long learning and professional practice.

The length of the residency program is one year, starting July 1. Typical rotations include:

  • Introduction to clinical practice and inpatient drug distribution
  • Practice management
  • Primary care
  • Infectious disease and antibiotic use review
  • Surgical Intensive Care Unit (ICU)
  • Pediatrics
  • Drug information
  • Medical ICU
  • Cardiology
  • Hematology and oncology
The rotations can be customized based on the resident's areas of interest. The resident will be assigned to work as a staff pharmacist approximately four days a month.

Residency Project


The resident is required to complete a major project prior to the conclusion of the residency. The project should be suitable for publication and will be presented at the Western States Conference.

Requirements


The applicant must be a graduate of an accredited School of Pharmacy with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Candidates must be eligible for licensure in California and the resident is expected to be licensed midway through the program.

Benefits


Benefits include 26 days of paid time off, 10 of which are used for educational leave and medical and dental insurance.
