Digital mammography is the most technologically advanced equipment available for the early detection of breast abnormalities. Early detection followed by prompt treatment offers the best chance to treat breast cancer successfully.
With the use of digital technology, screening mammograms can now be performed within 10 to 12 minutes. Images are obtained and stored electronically, thereby eliminating lost films.
On average, two images of each breast are taken while utilizing compression or pressure. At times, the compression can be uncomfortable. However, it is essential to obtaining quality images. To reduce discomfort it is recommended that women do not schedule mammograms one week prior to their menstrual cycle since breasts are usually more sensitive at this time. To further assist with image quality, patients should avoid wearing deodorant or talcum powder on the day of the exam.
