Stereotactic Radiotherapy

Stereotactic radiotherapy (SRT) is used to treat patients with primary benign and malignant brain tumors or metastatic brain cancers. It also may be used to treat specific inoperable brain tumors and on patients who have had previous treatments to the brain.

Using a removable head frame, SRT delivers its dose with extreme precision sparing surrounding healthy tissue and decreasing ill effects to the brain. High or low doses of radiation are used over the course of one to six weeks, depending on the complexity of the condition.

SRT may be used in combination with other radiation methods, such as
Gamma Knife, intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), and whole brain radiation. SRT patients experience fewer short- and long-term side effects than with whole brain radiation.

Patients should inform their doctors if they are claustrophobic, wear dentures or have any mouth difficulties.
