Superficial radiation therapy is a treatment option for certain patients with basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma and Kaposi's sarcoma. These types of cancer can be disfiguring due to the location and surgical scarring. Superficial radiation treatment offers excellent cosmetic results and is considerably less invasive than the traditional surgical approach. The procedure is painless and less expensive than traditional treatments.

Superficial radiation therapy uses a low energy radiation beam (X-ray). This beam only penetrates the top surface layer of the skin, avoiding deep tissue damage which minimizes scarring, particularly around the face.

Older skin cancer patients who take blood thinning medications, patients with large scars or those that want to avoid scars may be candidates for superficial radiation therapy.
