Stipends

Effective as of July 1, 2007, physicians-in-training will receive annual stipends as follows:

  • PGY-1 - $45,848
  • PGY-2 - $47,319
  • PGY-3 - $48,947
  • PGY-4 - $50,888
  • PGY-5 - $53,149
  • PGY-6 - $55,870
  • PGY-7 - $57,540

Leave Benefits

Residents and fellows are entitled to leave benefits as follows:

  • Paid time off, consisting of four calendar weeks each academic year, to cover vacations, holidays and incidental sick leave
  • Family leave, available by request
  • Medical leave, which is provided under the paid time off benefits, with additional leave available by request
  • Professional leave, provided under paid time off benefits. Additional benefits vary by training program.

Eating, Sleeping, Parking, Laundry and Lab Coats

Sleeping quarters, parking, uniform laundry service and lab coats and are provided free of charge. A subsidy to cover meals when on-call in the hospital is provided. Food service is available on campus at all times.

Insurance

Insurance benefits are provided as follows:

  • Medical and Dental: Group health and dental insurance are provided for house staff and eligible dependents. There are premium costs for some options in both categories. The health insurance for house officers is covered the first of the month following the date of hire; dental insurance is effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment.
  • Flex Plan: House staff may have expenses for group health and dental premiums and child care expenses deducted from their stipend checks on a pre-tax basis to reduce federal and state tax withholdings.
  • Life: A $30,000 life insurance policy and a $10,000 accident insurance policy is provided by the Medical Center, effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment. Supplemental life and accidental death insurance may be purchased.
  • Professional Liability: The Medical Center provides professional liability insurance in such form and amounts as generally provided by the Medical Center with respect to events occurring during Physician-in-Training's participation in the training program, inclusive of rotations to other institutions. Coverage is not provided for moonlighting.
  • Disability: The Medical Center provides employer-paid short-term disabiilty (STD) as well as long-term disability (LTD) insurance effective the first of the month following 30 days of employment. A contribution towards state disability insurance (SDI) is also provided.
  • Workers Compensation: The Medical Center provides workers compensation insurance, which pays medical and loss of income benefits for work-incurred illness or injuries.

Retirement Savings Program

All house staff are eligible to participate in the Medical Center's 403(b) tax-sheltered annuity program available through ING. Contributions may be made on a pre-tax basis.

Health Services

Required annual physicals and medical care for work-incurred accidents and illnesses are provided.

The Housestaff Assistance Program operates through Work'n Life Matters to provide a full range of counseling and referral services to housestaff in CSMC-sponsored training programs. Work'n Life Matters staff are aware of the special needs of GME participants and their families and can provide information, counseling, and referrals tailored to those needs. The services of Work'n Life Matters are strictly confidential.

Education

Classes in Basic Life Support, Advanced Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support are provided at the Medical Center. The Continuing Medical Education program offers many classes, which you may attend without cost. The Medical Library also provides Medline and Internet training free of charge. Individual programs may provide funding for professional presentations at state and national meetings and for Senior Board review registration.

Miscellaneous Benefits

Pagers, email and on-campus Internet access are provided.

Notarization services for documents required by CSMC (such as USMLE and CA medical license applications and other training-related documents) are provided at no charge to CSMC residents and fellows. In addition, California forms for fingerprinting are available in the GME Office.

Interest-free loans up $1,500 can be obtained through the GME Office. Payments are automatically deducted from payroll, and loans must be repaid in full by the completion of training at CSMC. Applications are available in the GME Office.

Discount tickets for cultural events, movies and amusement parks can be purchased from Recreation Connection, an onsite program.

The Ride Share Program allows those who carpool or arrive by alternate means (e.g., walking, bus or bicycle) to earn gift certificates to restaurants, stores and major attractions. A ride share office is available on campus to assist you with alternate transportation arrangements.

While the Graduate Medical Education Office does not have a housing referral service, we do provide general information on housing in the area. The services of the UCLA off-campus housing office are also available to Cedars-Sinai residents. Please contact the GME Office for more information.
