Rehabilitation services at Cedars-Sinai range from Acute Therapy Services to inpatient services provided through the Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit to adult Outpatient Rehabilitation Services.
Adults in the medical and surgical units of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center who could benefit from physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology and neuropsychology services can be referred by their doctor for Acute Therapy Services. Each patient who is referred is assessed to identify his or her rehabilitation needs. A plan of care is then designed to address those needs. With treatment, patients are helped to reach their best abilities in moving, functioning and caring for themselves independently before leaving the hospital.
Acute therapy services patients may be seen one or more times a day, depending on their condition and needs. Special attention is given to ensuring that the transition back home or to another care setting (rehabilitation, transitional care or community skilled nursing) is smooth for both patient and family. Preparation for this step usually includes instruction in home programs, such as a strengthening exercise or walking regimen. The rehabilitation team may also provide education and materials about home safety, preventing falls and self-care activities (bathing and dressing). Techniques for communicating or special equipment that allow a patient to adapt following an illness or injury that requires rehabilitation are also provided when needed.
The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit is a dedicated 28-bed unit on the seventh floor of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center (7SW) with its own dedicated therapy staff. The Inpatient Rehabilitation Unit is designed for patients who have suffered damage to their brains or spines or had a stroke. The unit offers intensive therapy to retrain these patients to walk, talk, take care of daily activities of living and how to adapt to continued challenges from their injury or condition.
Cedars-Sinai's Outpatient Rehabilitation Services offers an exceptional range of rehabilitation and specialty programs.
