Genetic Risk Assessment

The first program of its kind, the GenRISKŪ Adult Genetics Program at Cedars-Sinai is a unique service that assesses the risk of diseases in individuals based on genetic factors. Diseases evaluated include diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, atherosclerosis, colon and breast cancer, mitral valve prolapse, hemochromatosis, hypertension and pernicious anemia. Customized, preventive advice is offered to each individual to help him or her minimize the effects of their particular genetic risk.

The GenRISK team works closely with specialists and referring doctors. The team offers consultations and detailed, written reports to help doctors tailor treatments to each patient's specific needs. Services include:

  • Testing for genetic factors that can lead to diseases
  • Educating patients about suspected genetic conditions
  • Evaluating genetic risks for disease
  • Helping prevent or delay the disease, or manage it should it occur
  • Counseling about the feelings that can come after learning about a genetic susceptibility
Patients may be referred to the GenRISK Adult Genetics Program if they have a personal or family history of:
  • Brain cancer
  • Breast cancer
  • Colon cancer
  • Coronary artery disease
  • Endometrial cancer
  • Hemochromatosis
  • Kidney disease
  • Ovarian cancer
  • Prostate cancer
