Stephen A. Geller, MD

Chairman Emeritus, Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine; liver pathology; autopsy

Stephen A. Geller, MD was the Chairman of the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where he provided more than 22 years of outstanding leadership. He currently is a pathologist in the department and is also a professor of pathology at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).

Board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology, Dr. Geller is one of the nation's recognized authorities in the study of the pathology of the liver, with research interests in various aspects of liver disease. A presenter at numerous lectures throughout the world, he has written more than 120 articles for peer-reviewed journals. He also co-authored Histopathology and Biopsy Interpretation of the Liver, as well as many textbook chapters. He is a founder and Secretary-Treasurer of the Hans Popper Hepatopathology Society. A proponent for the autopsy, he has served on many national autopsy committees.

Dr. Geller is a true advocate for education, and a fund to promote education and research in pathology was established in his name by the College of American Pathologists Foundation. He received the Award for Excellence in Teaching from City University of New York and five times has been presented with the Golden Apple Award for teaching at Cedars-Sinai.

Dr. Geller was Vice President of the New York Pathological Society and President of the Los Angeles Society of Pathologists and the California Society of Pathologists. He is an active member of many other professional societies. In addition, Dr. Geller has served on numerous committees at Cedars-Sinai, including the Medical Executive Committee.

Dr. Geller received his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine in Washington DC. He completed an internship at Lenox Hill Hospital and a pathology residency at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, where he served as Chief Resident. He was Professor and Vice Chairman of the Department of Pathology at the Mount Sinai Medical Center, New York before assuming the Chairmanship of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Cedars-Sinai.
