Transfusion Medicine
Originally established in June 1974, the Division of Transfusion Medicine is located in a state-of-the-art facility on the street level in the South Tower of Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. The Rita and Taft Schreiber Division of Transfusion Medicine works to ensure a medically safe and adequate supply of blood for Cedars-Sinai Medical Center patients and provides support services for community donors. Three full-time medical directors and a staff of highly trained medical technologists, nurses and assistants provides the highest quality care for donors and patients.
Through the Immunohematology Laboratory, the Division of Transfusion Medicine provides blood components for transfusion in addition to consultation for patients with immune hemolytic anemia, hemolytic disease of the newborn and specialized testing to ensure safe transfusions for patients with antibodies to red cell antigens.
The Division of Transfusion Medicine has established the William C. Bannerman Bone Marrow Transplantation Laboratory to process and store bone marrow, as well as cells for transplantation.
The blood donor facility accommodates blood, platelet and plasma collections, as well as autologous blood collection. In addition, therapeutic apheresis (including plasma exchange, red cell exchange and cellular depletions) is performed for a variety of neurologic, immune-mediated and hematologic disorders. Peripheral blood progenitor cells for autologous and allogeneic transplantation are collected in the therapeutic apheresis unit and processed on site. 
The Division of Transfusion Medicine has an active teaching program for resident physicians in pathology and supports research in areas of transfusion safety and therapeutic apheresis.
