Steven D. Colquhoun, MD, FACS

Surgical Director, Liver Transplantation

In 1996, after founding and directing the liver transplant program at the University of California-Davis Medical Center, Steven D. Colquhoun, MD, FACS, brought his leadership, research and surgical skills to Cedars-Sinai's transplant team.

Dr. Colquhoun's research interests center on efforts to improve our understanding of the function of transplanted livers, as well as the mechanisms leading to some forms of liver disease. He has a special interest in hepatocellular carcinoma, which is the tumor that often afflicts those with liver cirrhosis. He recently received a major grant from the National Institute of Health to study this issue - the only grant of its kind in the United States. Dr. Colquhoun is also active in all clinical areas relating to liver surgery and transplantation.

Dr. Colquhoun is a member of the American Society of Transplant Physicians, the American Society of Transplant Surgeons, the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases and many other professional organizations. He is board certified in both general surgery and in critical care, and is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.

After receiving undergraduate degrees in both biology and psychology from the University of California, Irvine, Dr. Colquhoun earned his medical degree from Loyola University of Chicago in 1984. He completed a general surgical residency at the University of California, Los Angeles in 1990, including fellowships in both surgical oncology and multi-organ transplantation. Dr. Colquhoun has extensive training and experience in both adult and pediatric liver transplantation, as well as kidney transplantation. He continues to teach and lecture at UCLA and serves as an Associate Professor of Surgery at the UCLA School of Medicine.
