RF Ablation in Patients with Liver Cancer and Hepatic Cirrhosis

Multicenter Feasibility Study of Percutaneous Radiofrequency Ablation of Hepatocellular Carcinoma in Cirrhotic Patients

Working Title:

The purpose of this research is to determine if percutaneous radiofrequency ablation (RFA) of the liver to treat hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with cirrhosis is at least as effective as hepatic resection or liver transplantation. This research is also being conducted to estimate the proportion of patients who undergo solitary or repetitive liver RFA treatment sessions whose liver tumors can be controlled with no identifiable tumor present within the liver at 18 months following initiation of therapy. RFA is a therapeutic technique that can eradicate [liver] tumors, can be used in a greater number of patients and can be used to treat tumor recurrences within the liver that occur in the majority of patients.
