Michael I. Lewis, MD is Director of the Respiratory Intensive Care Unit and Co-Director of the Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Lewis is also a professor of medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA).
Dr. Lewis' primary areas of clinical and research interest involve emphysema, tobacco-related disease and acute nutritional deprivation. His research has received funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Plum Foundation and the University of California. He has written articles on his research for numerous peer-reviewed publications, including American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, Journal of Applied Physiology and The New England Journal of Medicine.
Board certified in pulmonary and critical medicine, Dr. Lewis is a fellow of the American College of Chest Physicians and a member of the American Thoracic Society and the American Federation for Clinical Research. He is on the editorial board of Journal of Applied Physiology, and he is a reviewer for American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, European Respiratory Journal, Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Pediatrics and Respiratory Physiology.
Dr. Lewis earned his medical degree (MBBCh) from the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa. He completed an internship, a senior internship and a residency in internal medicine at Johannesburg Hospital, where he received training in pulmonary and critical care medicine. Dr. Lewis also fulfilled a pulmonary fellowship at City of Hope Medical Center in Duarte, California.
