Braces for the Spine

Limiting the motion of the spine can often aid the healing process, especially in the case of spine fractures or postoperative fusions. Bracing is also used to treat adolescent idiopathic scoliosis and progressive diseases causing curvature of the spine.

There are generally two types of braces recommended for spinal conditions:

  • Rigid braces, which are form-fitting plastic braces that take away about half of the spine's ability to move. While effective, they tend to be heavy, hot and uncomfortable.
  • Corset braces, which are elastic braces. They are sometimes recommended to support the spine and limit its motion after a lumbar fusion. These types of braces are usually made of cotton and nylon. They are lighter and more comfortable than rigid braces.
