You will be asked to disclose whether you have any metal in your body prior to any MR exam. Having metal in your body does not automatically disqualify you from having an MR exam. All patients are individually evaluated.
In some cases, people with pacemakers, defibrilators or other electronic devices can not have an MR scan.
Most MR procedures do not require advance preparation. Below are the exceptions:
MRI abdomen and/or pelvis (exam time: 60-120 min)
- Do not eat or drink five hours prior to your exam.
MRI of prostate (exam time: 90-120 min)
- Use Fleet Enema Kit # 3 from your local drug store. Follow the "24-hr prep" instructions.
MRI cholangiogram (exam time: 45 min) - Do not eat or drink eight hours prior to your exam.
Cardiac MR Stress Test (with Adenosine)
- Consult your physician about going off beta blockers for 48 hours and calcium channel blockers for 24 hours before the test.
- Consult your physician before discontinuing ANY medication (especially if diabetic.)
- Do not eat or drink three hours prior to your exam
- Do not eat or drink caffeine products (such as: chocolate, sodas, teas, coffee or Anacin/Excedrin. Note: decaffeinated products still contain small amounts of caffeine and should be avoided.)
- Please wear a comfortable two-piece outfit and walking shoes.
- Please bring all of your medications with you.
- Diabetics: If you are not going to eat immediately after your exam, do not take your diabetic medications. Again, please check with your physician before discontinuing any medication.
