Emergency Department Chaplain

Dn. George Baghdassarian, MDiv, BCC, is a Christian chaplain ordained as a deacon by the Armenian Church of North America. He responds to trauma cases and other crises in units throughout Cedars-Sinai, with a focus on the Emergency Department.

Chaplain Baghdassarian helps assess how patients and families in life-threatening situations integrate their values, beliefs and understanding of the sacred.

He earned a bachelor's degree in history with a minor in cultural anthropology from California State University, Northridge, and a master's of divinity at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena. He then became a full-time minister, serving as a youth leader, teacher, Christian education director and pastor in the Armenian Evangelical Church and Armenian Apostolic Church.

In 2009, he pursued a career in hospital spiritual care, becoming a resident chaplain and earning four units of clinical pastoral education at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, before becoming the full-time night chaplain at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills. Over the course of his residency and as a full-time chaplain, he developed a specialty in applying pastoral care to the areas of emergency medicine, intensive care and trauma.

He is a board-certified chaplain with the Association of Professional Chaplains.
