John C. Liu, MD, a board certified neurosurgeon, is Vice Chair of Neurosurgery for Spine Services, Co-Medical Director of the Cedars-Sinai Spine Center and Director of the Neurological Surgery Residency Program. He is one of the nation's premier specialists in complex and minimally invasive spine surgery and is leading research to study innovative tools, materials and techniques for spinal surgery.
Dr. Liu is a pioneer in research focusing on adult spinal deformity outcomes, adult scoliosis, vertebroplasty and new therapies for spinal cord injury. He is also involved in developing minimally invasive technologies for lumbar discectomy, lumbar fusion, spinal stabilization and artificial disc replacement.
Dr. Liu previously served as Director of Spinal Surgery in the Department of Neurological Surgery at Northwestern University in Chicago.
Joining the United States Army Reserves in 1992 and achieving promotions to the rank of major in 1999 and lieutenant colonel in 2005, Dr. Liu earned several honors, including the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Brooke Army Medical Center Commanding General Award for Excellence, and the Army Achievement Medal for Meritorious Service.
Dr. Liu earned his medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, and completed a surgical internship, a residency in neurological surgery, and a fellowship in complex spine surgery and minimally invasive surgery at the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.
