Mitchell S. Karlan, MD, FACS, is Director of Community Resources at the Saul and Joyce Brandman Breast Center, A Project of Women's Guild. In addition, he is a senior attending surgeon at Cedars-Sinai and a member of the Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors.
In 2000, Dr. Karlan was appointed Commissioner of the Medical Board of California's Division of Licensing. He was President of the Division of Licensing and the California Medical Board. He was a member of the Board of Trustees American Society of General Surgery. Dr. Karlan was Chairman of the Surgical Caucus of the American Medical Association (AMA), and a past member and chairman of the Council on Scientific Affairs of the AMA. In 1998, Dr. Karlan was named "Man of the Year" by the American Cancer Society, Southern California. He was chairman of the Alternative Medicine Committee under the Medical Board, California.
Dr. Karlan is a member of several professional societies, including the American Society of General Surgery, Los Angeles County Medical Association and the California Medical Association. He has published numerous articles on general and oncologic surgery in peer-reviewed publications. He is a former president of the Los Angeles County Medical Association.
Dr. Karlan received his bachelor's degree from Ohio State University and his medical degree from Harvard University. After receiving a master's degree in surgery from Ohio State University, he completed his internship at the University of California, San Francisco. Dr. Karlan completed a residency in general surgery at Ohio State University and a residency in oncologic surgery at Cancer Memorial Hospital in New York City. He has been chairman of the board of directors of SCPIE (Southern California Physicians Insurance Exchange) for the past 15 years.
