The sunny playground at Watts’ 112th Street Elementary School was bursting with healthy energy as more than 600 students and parents joined in our Think Healthy! Community Nutrition and Health Fair. It was just one of many community health fairs COACH organizes for children and families at elementary schools in underserved communities.
Combating childhood obesity is one of our top community health priorities. Obese or overweight children are at increased risk of developing a range of medical and mental health problems and, with one in three children in the United States affected, the situation is urgent and critical.
Our approach is strategic and broad-based. In addition to community health fairs, we operate the COACH Be Healthy, Be Strong! Nutrition and Fitness Program. This program provides school-based nutrition and fitness education for children, preschool through 6th Grade, as well as nutrition education workshops and cooking classes for parents in the community.
