Pediatric Infectious Diseases

The Division of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center offers a three-year fellowship training program for pediatricians interested in a career in infectious diseases. It is a fully accredited program under the directorship of Dr. Moshe Arditi. The Division has three full-time faculty members and a clinical research nurse. The clinical program provides a wide range of patient experience, both on the inpatient service and in the outpatient setting. The inpatient consultation service provides consultations on the pediatric ward, as well as the neonatal and pediatric intensive care units. A weekly outpatient infectious diseases clinic sees hospital follow-up and new pediatric infectious diseases referrals. The pediatric infectious diseases center also hosts a clinic for the evaluation of internationally adopted children, and a multidisciplinary clinic for children exposed to and infected with HIV. Pediatric infectious diseases fellows rotate through the microbiology laboratory for one month in their first year and for three months (one per year) to the infectious diseases program at UCLA Medical Center, Westwood campus.

The Infectious Diseases Fellowship Training Program at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center has both clinical and basic science research components. Clinical research interest areas include congenital and perinatal infections and treatment of children with HIV infection. The division has a National Institutes of Health-funded research laboratory with two PhDs and two MDs. The ongoing research projects include bacterial pathogenesis of sepsis and septic shock, recognition of bacterial antigens by the innate immune system and toll-like receptors, signal transduction mechanisms in endotoxin-mediated activation of macrophages and vascular endothelial cells, role of chlamydia pneumonia infection in the progression of atherosclerosis, and the interactions and effects of bacterial antigens with HIV replication.
