Nursing Services

The Samuel Oschin Cancer Center offers nursing services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Each patient is assigned a team of practice, case manager and treatment area nurses to care for him or her throughout treatment, ensuring continuity of care, as well as fostering strong ties between the staff, patient and family.

Nurses come to the Samuel Oschin Cancer Center with many years of previous experience in oncology. Treatment area nurses, such as those working in radiation oncology and chemotherapy, go through extensive, additional oncology training to receive certification as oncology certified nurses (OCN). Additionally, each nurse has to annually verify his or her clinical skills.

As a result, the lengthy tenure of our nurses is indicative of the Samuel Oschin Cancer Center's high standards of care delivery and the positive relationship nurses have with our patients.

Treatment area OCN nurses triage during off-hours, answering phone calls from patients and family members. If necessary, they will contact patients' physicians and update them on their patients' conditions. Any instructions from the center's physicians are then relayed directly to the patients. This quality triage service saves time and is better than an answering service because nurses and doctors are familiar with the patients' conditions and treatments.
