Cancers of the breast and reproductive tract strike more than one-quarter million women in the U.S. each year.

Cedars-Sinai Women's Cancer Research Institute at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute is a multidisciplinary program that is working to reduce the threat of cancer to women through research, education, early detection and prevention. Established in January 2002, the Women's Cancer Research Institute fosters collaborative research between scientists and physicians to bring the most innovative laboratory discoveries directly to women with breast and/or gynecologic cancers.

Under the leadership of Dr. Beth Karlan, an internationally recognized gynecologic cancer surgeon and research scientist, the Women's Cancer Research Institute works side by side with Cedars-Sinai's patient care programs and services to integrate innovative research across a wide spectrum of programs devoted to preventing, diagnosing and treating women's cancers. Furthermore, as an important component of Cedars-Sinai's Burns and Allen Research Institute, the institute brings together laboratory investigators with diverse interests and talents to advance the field and scientific knowledge of women's cancers. To achieve its goals, the institute offers pilot grants to investigators to support novel research ideas that require further exploration. In addition, the institute encourages collaboration between scientists and clinicians devoted to cancer research by establishing monthly seminars to discuss and share findings.

The Women's Cancer Research Institute also published Today's Woman - Staying Healthy* to educate women on the risk factors and warning signs for women's cancers.
