Supportive Care Services for Cancer

The goal of Supportive Care Services is to ensure that each cancer patient receives personal care for their physical, social, spiritual and emotional needs. Our physicians, nurses, social workers and dietitians work together to help you cope effectively with the stress of your cancer and its treatment. We offer you and your family and friends education and information on diets and supplements, as well as referrals to acupuncture services, exercise programs and community-based support groups. We also help you plan for your future, achieve your personal goals and help you navigate changes in your care.

Social Work Support

Cancer and cancer treatment is often accompanied by emotional concerns. Whether you are a patient, family member, friend or caregiver, talking to a professional can help you explore and manage your emotions and feel more in control of your treatment plan. To help address these concerns, our master's-prepared oncology clinical social workers provide support through short-term individual psychotherapy, caregiver support and a variety of cancer support groups and programs. We can also help with transportation services and offer a housing program.

Clinical Nutrition Services

Nutrition services at Cedars-Sinai are provided by board-certified registered dietitians. These specialists in oncology nutrition have earned additional certification by the Commission on Dietetic Registration to provide services to patients and their caregivers as an integral part of cancer care. Our primary goal is to help patients optimize their nutritional status to help them achieve their treatment goals while maintaining physical and emotional strength. Free nutritional consultations are available.

Supportive Care Medicine (Pain and Symptom Management)

Cancer pain and symptom management services are available to ensure that all patients with significant symptoms such as cancer pain and fatigue receive care to minimize these symptoms and help restore the best possible quality of life. We work closely with each patient’s primary oncologist to help manage these physical symptoms.

Psychiatrists are available to help patients cope better with the stresses of their cancer and its treatment. When appropriate, a psychiatric consultation is available to assess whether medication may be useful in addressing symptoms such as depression and anxiety that commonly occur during cancer treatment. Contact us for a consultation with our oncology psychiatrists. We will ask your doctor for a referral.

Spiritual Care

The Spiritual Care Department provides interfaith, spiritual and emotional support for patients, families and loved ones. Fertility Preservation

Many cancer treatments can permanently affect fertility. Fertility preservation techniques such as egg freezing or embryo freezing are most effective when used before cancer treatment begins. We offer counseling for hormone replacement therapy, contraception, ovarian reserve testing and preimplantation genetic diagnosis for single gene mutations (BRCA).
