California's First Dedicated Inpatient Advanced Heart Failure Unit
The arrival of Jon Kobashigawa, MD at the Heart Institute in January 2010 marked a significant milestone in building one of the world’s best heart care and heart surgery programs. Dr. Kobashigawa and his colleagues are internationally regarded for their expertise in treating and managing advanced heart failure. Under the leadership of Dr. Kobashigawa, Michele Hamilton, MD and Babak Azarbal, MD, in collaboration with the surgical team led by Alfredo Trento, MD, heart transplants performed at the Institute have increased by over 30 percent. In August 2010, the Heart Institute opened California’s first dedicated inpatient advanced heart failure unit, designed for patients with chronic cardiomyopathy who require tailored therapy (including hemodynamic monitoring). Driven by a team approach, this modern unit provides highly coordinated, interdisciplinary care focused on enhancing patients’ quality of life and reducing future hospital readmissions.
