Heart rhythm problems (heart arrhythmias) occur when the electrical impulses in the heart do not work properly. This causes the heart to beat too fast, too slow or irregularly. Heart arrhythmias may feel like a fluttering or racing heart, and they're often harmless. Some heart arrhythmias, however, may cause bothersome — sometimes even life-threatening — signs and symptoms.
Multiple genetic and environmental factors can contribute to the risk of arrhythmias in patients affected with these conditions. A detailed evaluation is required to assess the risk of patients and family members to be afflicted with these conditions.
Our team of experts provides a multidisciplinary approach to patients affected with familial arrhythmia syndromes. Patients are seen by a cardiac electrophysiologist who specializes in these conditions, in conjunction with a medical genetics specialist and a genetic counselor. Using a personalized approach, different clinical and genetic testing modalities are combined to provide an accurate diagnosis and patient-specific treatment. Most importantly, however, is the screening and counseling that are offered to families of patients afflicted with familial conditions. This is the key differentiating component of our clinical program – the direct outreach to the patient’s family to help diagnosis potential heart-related genetic conditions before they become problematic.
