Microtia Related Terms
The following is a list of commonly used words and their definitions, relating to microtia:
- Anotia: congenital absence of the ear(s)
- Aural atresia: the absence or closure of an ear or ear canal
- Bilateral microtia: microtia of both external ears
- Canal stenosis: a narrowing or constriction of the diameter of the ear canal
- Computed tomography (CT) scan: A special X-ray in which high definition images of a part of the body are created by a computer
- Craniofacial: relating to the face and skull
- Facial asymmetry: noticeable differences between the left and the right sides of a face
- Goldenhar syndrome: incomplete development of the ear, nose, soft palate, lip, jaw and, in rare cases, internal organs
- Hemifacial microsomia: when half of the face has not developed to the same extent as the opposite side. This condition may occur on the same side of the face as the microtia
- MEDPOR ear reconstruction: an ear reconstruction that uses a synthetic framework and the body's own tissue to create an ear
- Microtia: an abnormally small, malformed or absent external ear
- Otoplasty: plastic surgery of the external ear used to correct ears that protrude too much
- Prosthetic ear: a silicone ear that is either "stuck" to the side of the face with an adhesive or attached by an "anchor" surgically implanted into the bone near the absent ear
- Rib cartilage ear reconstruction: ear reconstruction where rib cartilage is used to construct an ear
- Treacher Collins syndrome: a craniofacial disorder which may cause abnormally small cheekbones, improper eyelid formation and microtia
