The Autopsy Pathology Service conducts autopsies on Cedars-Sinai patients at the request of the physician or the family. Cedars-Sinai provides this service to its patients at no charge to the family. The autopsy is a medical procedure carried out by pathologists to learn more about disease for the benefit of future patients and for the benefit of family members and other loved ones.

The Breast Pathology Service is one of the largest in the country, accessioning approximately 2,500 specimens annually, including more than 600 breast cancers. Comprehensive evaluations of benign and neoplastic breast biopsies and excisions by sophisticated light microscopy, immunohistochemistry and digitized image analysis are offered.

Consultation and/or second opinions are available on breast biopsies diagnosed elsewhere.

The Cardiac Pathology Service provides support for the busiest cardiac transplant practice in the United States.  In excess of 1500 transplant and native heart biopsies and explants are evaluated, including immunofluorescence for C4d and other stains, and electron microscopy as needed.

The Coagulation service performs approximately 3500 consultations annually to assess all types of bleeding, clotting and platelet disorders. The full spectrum of coagulation testing is available. Additionally, the laboratory offers thromboelastogram, a global hemostasis test to evaluate patients with complex bleeding disorders and to manage blood product utilization.

The Cytogenetics Laboratory provides the full range of state-of-the-art services, including cytogenetic analysis, high-resolution chromosome analysis and molecular cytogenetics (FISH).  Analysis can be performed on a variety of specimens including blood, bone marrow, tissues, amniotic fluid cells and placental tissue including chorionic villi.

Faculty:

The Cytopathology Service evaluates more than 22,000 body fluid specimens, aspirates and Pap smears, and 3,000 fine needle aspirations from all organ systems. These are examined for diagnostic purposes by cytotechnologists and pathologists. Ancillary studies such as immunohistochemistry and molecular tests are performed on smears and cell blocks to provide expert diagnoses with therapeutic and prognostic information.

Services Offered:

The Dermatopathology service reviews approximately 8,000 cases annually, both for primary diagnosis and consultation/second opinion by board certified dermatopathologists. Our wide spectrum of services includes routine sectioning, special histochemistry and immunohistochemistry, chromogenic in situ hybridization, immunofluorescence, and horizontal sections for evaluation of alopecia.

Services Offered:

The Electron Microscopy service reviews approximately 3100 cases annually, both for primary diagnosis and consultation/second opinion. Approximately 95% are renal cases for diagnosis of disease or for transplant monitoring. Almost all the remaining cases are for ciliary dysfunction, neoplasm, storage diseases, and neuro-muscular or muscular diseases.

The Endocrine Pathology provides pathology services for biopsies and excisions from parathyroid and thyroid glands. Neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions are evaluated with routine and special stains, immunohistochemistry and molecular studies as appropriate.

The Gastrointestinal Pathology service provides extensive expertise in diagnosis of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases of the gastrointestinal and biliary tracts, and the pancreas. The Head & Neck pathology service provides pathology services for biopsies and excisions from the head, neck and nasal cavity areas. The Hematopathology service provides comprehensive expert diagnostic and consultative services for hematopoietic disorders involving peripheral blood, bone marrow, lymph nodes and solid organs. Offered diagnostic modalities include histopathology, flow cytometry, immunohistochemistry, cytogenetics and molecular studies including PCR and FISH analysis, providing the most complete diagnostic and prognostic information for neoplastic and non-neoplastic hematopoietic disorders.

The Liver Pathology service reviews native and transplant liver specimens for primary diagnosis and consultation/second opinion. Approximately 75% are native liver biopsies or excisions, and the remainder are transplant biopsies or explants. The Molecular Pathology service uses state-of-the-art assays  for the diagnosis, prognosis and individualized predictive response to therapy in solid tumors and hematopoietic malignancies.   Molecular testing is used in genetics and pharmacogenomics to screen for inherited disorders, and to genetically determine an individual’s best choice and response to drugs, Genetic testing also is used for the diagnosis of infectious organisms.  The Cytogenetics service is seamlessly integrated with the molecular pathology service, synergizing technologies for best diagnosis and patient outcome in genetics and cancer.

TThe Neuropathology service provides expert diagnostic and consultation for specimens from the central and peripheral nervous system for neoplastic and non-neoplastic disorders. Modalities used include immunohistochemical and molecular testing, and electron microscopy for diagnosis and prognostic markers. Post-mortem brains are assessed for dementias, and prion and other diseases. Diagnoses also are provided for muscle biopsies, including inflammatory, congenital, and metabolic and storage disorders, among others. The Neuropathology service provides expert diagnostic and consultation for specimens from the central and peripheral nervous system for neoplastic and non-neoplastic disorders. Modalities used include immunohistochemical and molecular testing, and electron microscopy for diagnosis and prognostic markers. The Pulmonary and Mediastinal Pathology service evaluates lung, pleura, thymus and other mediastinal specimens for primary diagnosis and consultation/second opinion. Diagnostic entities include lung cancer, interstitial lung disease, mesothelioma, thymoma and other neoplastic and non-neoplastic intrathoracic diseases. The division offers the full spectrum of immunohistochemical stains, FISH, PCR and molecular studies for full diagnostic interpretation with clinical correlation.

Services Offered:

The Renal Pathology service reviews approximately 3,000 cases annually, for primary diagnosis and consultation/second opinion. All biopsies are assessed by light, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. Special stains are used as needed to evaluate viruses, collagen type (IV) chains, IgG subtypes, amyloid types, etc. Approximately 80% of cases are native renal biopsies, and the remainder are transplants. Non-neoplastic portions of nephrectomy and autopsy kidneys, and allograft nephrectomies also are evaluated.The Renal Pathology service reviews approximately 3,000 cases annually, for primary diagnosis and consultation/second opinion. All biopsies are assessed by light, immunofluorescence and electron microscopy. Special stains are used as needed to evaluate viruses, collagen type (IV) chains, IgG subtypes, amyloid types, etc. Approximately 80% of cases are native renal biopsies, and the remainder are transplants. Non-neoplastic portions of nephrectomy and autopsy kidneys, and allograft nephrectomies also are evaluated.

Services Offered:

The Transfusion Medicine Division provides specialized testing to ensure safe transfusions, and consultation for patients with immune hemolytic anemias and other blood disorders.  The blood donor facility collects all fractions of blood, including autologous donations.  Therapeutic apheresis services are offered for exchanges, treatment of various neurologic, immune-mediated and hematologic disorders, and collection of cells for transplantation.

The Urologic Pathology service reviews approximately 1,400 cases annually for primary diagnosis, and in excess of 450 consultation/second opinion cases. The internationally recognized faculty is known for diagnosis of neoplastic lesions of the prostate, kidney, bladder and testes, using morphology and the most advanced specialized tests and molecular techniques. Urovysion also is performed routinely.
