More than 10 billion laboratory tests are performed in the United States each year.
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' 2000 census, an additional 106,000 laboratory technologists and technicians will be needed by 2010 to meet the needs of a growing and aging American population.
12,200 new laboratory professionals will be needed annually to meet the growing need of the world's population, but only 4,000 to 6,000 graduates will join the workforce each year.
