Basic Research
The Department of Neurology's Rose Moss Neurogenetics Laboratory has received continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for more than a decade. More than 100 research papers and many books and chapters have been published on basic research performed by the Department of Neurology.
Key areas of focus for Neurology research include:
- Screen naturally occurring and synthesized molecules for neuroprotective effects in high-throughput stroke screening models.
- Assess the mechanisms of stroke cytotoxicity by understanding the role of the serine protease thrombin and its receptor PAR 1 in neurons in the core and penumbra of experimental stroke.
- Test derivatives of the spice cumin for potency and safety in pre-clinical stroke models
- Investigation of the genes involved in causing or preventing brain tumors and the role of these genes in development and neuronal functioning
