Research Focus
Developing the therapeutic postential of resident adult cardiac stem cells (CSCs) to promote a fast track to therapeutics. Developing appropriate harvesting and amplification methods of stem cells. Clinical research focus is on autologous CSC's in patients with cardiac dysfunction, including cell-based therapy. This research not only supports clinical studies but also translational work to image stem cell engratment, proliferation and differentiation in the heart.
Research Contributions
Elucidated fundamental mechanisms of cardiac dysfunction in stunned myocardium and other conditions related to ischemia and heart failure; founded the field of biological therapy for cardaic arrhythmias, notably gene-engineered biopacemakers; developed preclinical methods for isolation of cardsaic stem cells, leading to their clinical application in patients
Current investigations include:
stem cells for cardiac regeneration; cardiac electrophysiology
