Research Focus

Myocardial ischemia and cardioprotection. Focus is on mitochondria and autophagy. Using biochemistry, microscopy, and molecular physiology tools in cell, rodent, and porcine models to understand and mitigate ischemic injury with a goal of developing therapeutics for use in humans.

Research Contributions

Established the important role of autophagy in cardioprotection. Developed novel tools for studying autophagy. Pioneered the use of mitochondria-targeted recombinant proteins for cardiac therapy. First to report programmed cell death in the heart after ischemia and reperfusion. Established an animal model to understand how anthracyclines and neonatal viral infections can cause late-onset heart failure.

Current investigations include:

Autophagy, mitophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis in the heart. Impact of age and metabolic syndrome on autophagy and cardioprotection. Physiologic role of cardiac-resident stem cells in postnatal development. Therapeutic interventions to decrease risk of anthracycline-induced late-onset heart failure. Role of cardiac exosomes in tissue responses and viral infections.
