Led by Shawn Wagner, PhD, the Wagner Laboratory is focused on developing technology for increasing imaging capabilities of nuclear magnetic resonance. This includes magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS). MRI enhancement can occur by modifying the relaxation of protons in water and fat by addition of contrast agents or more recently by direct imaging of exogenous molecules injected into the body. MRS is being utilized to detection the chemical composition changes in tissue to evaluate disease states and has been implemented in the detection of malignant prostate and breast cancer. Now with new hyperpolarization technology, the real time metabolism of tissue is being investigated by detecting chemical conversion of injected exogenous metabolites.
