In the 2008 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals issue, Cedars-Sinai once again ranked among America's best in Neurology and Neurosurgery.

Battling a Deadly Foe: Researchers at Cedars-Sinai are racing to develop experimental treatments, and even vaccines, for fast-growing malignant brain tumors like the one Senator Edward Kennedy has been diagnosed with (May 20, 2008). To read the complete article, please click here.

A Premier Department for Neurological Surgery

The Department of Neurosurgery is dedicated to advancing the field of neurosurgery, providing leading-edge, compassionate clinical care and conducting unparalleled research for the full range of neurosurgical conditions. The Institute's multifaceted programs encompass brain tumors, neurovascular diseases, functional disorders, pain, trauma and other complex conditions requiring neurosurgical intervention for both adults and children. We offer the full spectrum of treatment options and are developing promising protocols for neurological diseases that are extremely difficult to treat with conventional therapies.

Under the direction of Keith L. Black, MD, department neurosurgeons and neuro-oncologists treat the full range of conditions affecting the brain, spinal cord and nerves. We offer both children and adults medical, surgical and neuro-oncologic care for:

  • Achondroplasia
  • Acoustic neuroma
  • Astrocytoma tumors
  • Brain aneurysm
  • Brain cancer
  • Brain tumors
  • Chiari I and chiari II malformations
  • Epilepsy
  • Glioblastoma multiforme
  • Hydrocephalus
  • Malignant and benign primary and secondary brain tumors
  • Meningioma
  • Oligodendroglioma
  • Pituitary tumors
  • Spinal cord dysraphia
  • Spinal deformities
  • Tethered cord
  • Trigeminal neuralgia
Many of the procedures done on both children and adults at the Department of Neurosurgery can be done using minimally invasive neurosurgery techniques.

The department takes a patient-centered approach to care. Because no two individuals respond in the same way to treatment, our multidisciplinary team of specialists provides highly individualized diagnostic and treatment services. Care is delivered in a compassionate, family-involved environment where education and psychosocial support are top priorities. Our support staff has a single goal: excellent service.

A unique strength of the Department of Neurosurgery is the ability to translate research findings from the laboratory into clinical practice, giving patients direct and rapid access to the latest treatment alternatives. This is especially crucial for individuals with complex, neurosurgical conditions who may have limited treatment options.
