TCAB & Other Healthcare Programs

For anyone who is interested in—or are pursuing degrees in—specific healthcare fields, there are a variety of volunteer opportunities that give you real-world exposure to your chosen career and, in some cases, credit hours toward your degree.

General Requirements

Healthcare student volunteers must be at least 18 years old, fully vaccinated against COVID-19, and will need to do the following:

  • Submit application
  • Upload valid proof of COVID-19 vaccination (digital record, PDF of card, etc.)
  • Be available for a virtual interview 
  • Complete general volunteer orientation
  • Complete initial background check
  • Receive initial and annual health evaluations 
  • Purchase volunteer smock/jacket ($30)

Healthcare Volunteer Programs

The Transforming Care at Bedside (TCAB) Volunteer Program can provide valuable, real-world experience. Volunteers learn what nurses and other healthcare professionals do in their daily work, and experience how it feels to interact with patients and families at the bedside.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of one 4-hour shift per week, between 5 a.m.–9 p.m., Monday–Sunday 
  • Minimum total of 100 hours
  • Get annual flu vaccine 
  • Wear white or black scrubs when on duty
  • Attend TCAB orientations

The goal of Community Health Improvement is to build capacity for individuals to care for themselves by providing health education, health screenings and vaccinations. Volunteers will have the opportunity to gain experience in each of these areas by assisting with pop-up vaccination clinics, providing health education to community members, planning, and assisting the program’s clinical staff with Cedars-Sinai health fairs.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be interested in pursuing a career or subspecialty in public health, community health and/or providing healthcare education.
  • Applicants must be able to volunteer during standard business hours (Monday-Friday, 9 a.m-5 p.m) and occasionally on weekends, as needed.
  • Applicants must be able to dedicate a minimum of 50 hours over a two- to three-month period, with a minimum of one four-hour shift per week.
  • Applicants must have access to a computer with video capability.

Volunteers will shadow genetic counselors in clinic, either remotely or in person, and assist with clerical duties such as updating patient family history, scanning and obtaining records, making patient reminder calls and other assigned projects.

Requirements: 

  • Applicants must be interested in a career in genetic counseling and planning to apply to genetic counseling programs in the near future. 
  • Able to volunteer during standard business hours (M-F, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.)
  • Able to dedicate a minimum of 50 hours over a 2-3 month period with a minimum of one 4-hour shift per week.
  • Applicants must reside in California.

Please note that due to high demand, there may be a waitlist and volunteers may not be able to start in the immediate future.

Participants in this volunteer program will gain experience by shadowing the genetic counselor remotely. Volunteers will additionally assist with clinical research or program tasks under supervision, such as data entry and informed consent digitizing, webpage content, etc. In-person and remote options for the clinical research tasks will be available.

Requirements:

  • Applicants must be interested in a career in genetic counseling and planning to apply to genetic counseling programs in the future.
  • Must be able to volunteer up to two hours per week in addition to shadowing, for a minimum of three months. Timing of this will be flexible.
  • Availability in a private space either Thursdays (9 a.m.-12 p.m. PT; 1 p.m.-2p.m. PT) or Fridays (1 p.m.-5 p.m. PT). Specific start and end times are flexible; you do not need to be available for entire clinic.
  • Access to a computer with video capability.
  • Applicants must reside in California.

For Informational Interview Requests Only: This is to learn more about the field of genetic counseling. Please email CSNeuroGeneticCounselors@cshs.org with your current level of interest in genetic counseling and best days/times for a 30 minute video call. Please be sure that subject line states “Attn: Informational Interview Request.”

Volunteers assist with reference projects, data curating, circulation work, archival projects, collection development and other assigned projects. The program provides 120 hours of credit needed for graduation.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be enrolled in a master of library science program.

This volunteer program is for anyone who requires observation hours to apply for a graduate program in physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech-language pathology. The program provides volunteers with a maximum of 20 hours.

Requirements

  • Applicants must be interested in pursuing a degree related to the fields of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

This volunteer opportunity is for mental-health interns who wish to work with teens. Volunteer work includes talking with teens on a telephone helpline and serving in the field with teen outreach.

Requirements: Applicants must be mental-health interns seeking licensing hours.
