Occupational Therapy Fellowship in Physical Rehabilitation - Acute Care
The mission of the Occupational Therapy Fellowship Program is to provide occupational therapists with advanced knowledge and skill training in physical rehabilitation to become a:
- Resource, educator, mentor and leader to others in the community that they serve
- Highly skilled patient care provider
- Competent consumer and contributor to the scientific literature
Core elements of the program include structured mentoring of the fellow by a team of professionals with high regard for clinical excellence and participation of the fellow in projects, including research, advocacy and leadership activities that assist in their total development.
Program philosophy on teaching and learning:
- Strong emphasis on the experiential component to develop advanced skills as a practitioner
- Facilitation of outcomes-driven, occupation-based OT practice which is relevant to current healthcare demands
- Opportunities for projects that relate theory to practice and a focus on the ability to synthesize this advanced knowledge within the medical rehabilitation setting
- Focus on intra-professional collaborative practice
Accredited in 2015 by the American Occupational Therapy Association, this fellowship program has a concentration in acute care occupational therapy.
Training & Curriculum
- 6-8 hours of mentored time scheduled weekly with staff mentor clinician
- Coursework in relevant evidence, diagnostic considerations and regulations that inform and guide best practice in the practice of occupational therapy in an acute care setting
- Implementation and reinforcement of the process of therapeutic intervention to facilitate occupational performance and participation based on available evidence and theoretical perspectives, models of practice and frames of reference
- Participation in scholarly activities that evaluate clinical practice, service delivery and/or professional issues
- Components necessary to complete requirements to achieve Board Certification in Physical Rehabilitation
Application Information
- Current California OT license
- Minimum of 1-year experience in an acute care hospital setting preferred, exceptional candidates with less than 1 year of experience may be considered
- Candidates who have completed an FW II rotation in an acute care setting may submit their resumes

- Cover letter detailing the reason for an application to the fellowship program
- Current resume/CV
- Deadline for Applications: November (residency period starts in March)
- Interviews will be scheduled for December-January
- Final decision to be made by February
1-year commitment with:
Participation and satisfactory completion of all written exams and requirements in the didactic curriculum and during an assessment of the fellow’s performance during established periods.
