The Research Informatics Core (RIC) is a Shared Resource at the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute. RIC's mission is to utilize the expertise of faculty and staff with a background in biology, epidemiology, biostatistics, and computer science to provide high-level informatics and information technology support to clinical and translational research. Our goal is to facilitate the study and understanding of biological processes, clinical disorders, pathologic abnormalities, and the relationships among them, using a wide variety of informatics techniques, applications, and user training.
The Research Informatics Core assigns highest priority to work in three areas: (1) investigator-initiated, therapeutic oncology clinical trials, especially those involving translational research; (2) cancer-related grant proposals seeking peer-reviewed funding from the NCI or equivalent funding agencies; and (3) funded peer-reviewed translational, therapeutic, or basic science studies. To enhance the ability of the Cancer Institute to conduct clinical trials, we also give high priority to teaching medical fellows and residents intent on pursuing research careers in cancer. A second tier of priorities, which are addressed on a time-available basis, relates to work on non-funded cancer-related projects intended for publication in major peer-reviewed journals. A third tier of priorities, which are also addressed on a time-available basis, relates to work not directly cancer-related.
The Research Informatics Core designs, develops and supports Oracle based database systems. We do not develop SQL Server, MS Access, MS Excel Spreadsheet, or other legacy systems. Databases are designed with the goal of caBIG compatibility.
Costs associated with our services are established on a case by case basis.
