Digital mammography is the most technologically advanced equipment available for the early detection of breast abnormalities. Early detection followed by prompt treatment offers the best chance to treat breast cancer successfully. The American College of Radiology and the Society of Breast Imaging both recommend mammography as a means of saving lives.
With the use of digital technology, screening mammograms can now be performed within 10 to 12 minutes. Images are obtained and stored electronically, thereby eliminating the risk of lost films.
On average, two images of each breast are taken while using compression or pressure. At times, the compression can be uncomfortable. However, it is essential to obtaining quality images. To reduce discomfort, we recommended that women do not schedule mammograms one week before their menstrual cycle since breasts are usually more sensitive at this time. To further assist with image quality, patients should avoid wearing deodorant or talcum powder on the day of the exam.
