About the Pancreatic and Biliary Diseases Program

Using minimally invasive technology, the experienced specialists at Cedars-Sinai bring together the latest in diagnostic and treatment options for diseases of the pancreas and the biliary tract.

These techniques include:

  • Endoscopy, a procedure that inserts a flexible tube with light and an optical system through a small incision to view inside hollow organs
  • Confocal laser endomicroscopy, an endoscopic technique that uses a low-power laser to obtain microscopic images of GI mucosal tissue.  This procedure may identify problem areas within a polyp, Barrett’s esophagus, or abnormal-looking stomach of the intestinal lining to guide biopsy and treatment
  • Endoscopic mucosal resection of large, flat polyps throughout the gastrointestinal tract (esophagus, stomach, duodenum, colon), thereby reducing the chance of needing surgery
  • Double-balloon enteroscopy for examination and treatment of conditions at literally any part of the small intestine
  • Endoscopic myotomy to treat Zenker’s diverticulum in the esophagus that causes trouble swallowing
  • ERCP, a technically difficult procedure, to treat problems within the bile duct or pancreatic duct that include gallstones, tumor blockage, chronic pancreatitis and benign strictures
  • Brachytherapy, a procedure in which radiation is delivered internally using an endoscope
  • Intracorporeal electrohydraulic lithotripsy, an endoscopic procedure for crushing and removing stones in the urinary tract
  • Endoscopic ultrasonography, a procedure that uses a small ultrasonic transducer attached to the tip on an endoscope to diagnose and treat
  • Wireless Capsule Endoscopy, a procedure in which the patient ingests a pill-sized capsule, containing a tiny camera, to capture images of the gastrointestinal tract that may not be seen by a colonoscopy or to identify digestive system tumors, cancers and disorders
