The collaborative approach to research in the Department of Biomedical Sciences has led to scientific discoveries across many areas. Below are some of the more recent discoveries.

Mechanisms of Disease

  • Identification of a nuclear protein required for development of all innate lymphoid cells involved in fighting infection, promoting repair and regulating metabolism in inflammation and in cancer
  • Molecular insights into mechanical ventilation-induced lung injury, including macrophage biology
  • Intra-renal generation of angiotensin II mediates salt-sensitive hypertension
  • Discovery of several new alternatively-translated proteins which are proving to be important to cell survival
  • Development of a novel methodology for rapid brain tumor modeling
  • Measurement of human memory retrieval processes and their impairments in amnesia

Diagnostic Innovations

  • Development of multiplex biomarker panels with digital image analysis as companion diagnostic for evaluation of responses to irradiation, PARP inhibitors and immuno-modulatory drugs in cancer
  • Development of novel MR techniques for accurate detection and staging of low-risk prostate cancer
  • Accurate detection and characterization of imaging biomarkers for high-risk coronary atherosclerotic plaques

Population Health

  • Evidence that individuals living at high altitudes have a significantly lower risk of developing type 2 diabetes and obesity
  • Establishment of population-based study to identify novel mechanisms of ventricular arrhythmogenesis
  • Evaluation of strategy to attenuate long-term cardiotoxicity of chemotherapeutic agents in cancer using statins
  • Public health approach to diagnosis and management of hypertension in African American males.

Research Technology & Resource Development

  • Creation of "omics" technical pipeline to begin to integrate "omics" with research and clinical databases
  • Creation of bioinformatics and functional genomics research center with broad interactions within research community
  • Creation of metabolism and mitochondrial research core for measurement of body fat composition and metabolism
  • Biostatistics resource for developing novel methodologies for phase1clinical trials in cancer
  • Provision of database of fungal component of intestinal micro-biome for use by national and international micro-biome community
