Programs & Cores

The Cedars-Sinai Board of Governors Regenerative Medicine Institute features seven programs, each with a unique mission and focus, but all aligned in advancing scientific discovery.

Regenerative medicine is an emerging discipline that focuses on regenerating new body tissues through either transplanting new cells or re-growing existing cells. At Cedars-Sinai, our focus is on reprogramming old cells back in time to a powerful state from which they can regenerate any tissue of the human body. They can also be used to model human diseases in a petri dish. Finally, they may eventually be used for personalized medicine, where each patient at Cedars-Sinai has his/her own stem cells for therapy and drug testing.

Specializing in cell and gene therapies with a focus on unmet disorders, we advance regenerative medicine through education and training.

Defining the molecular mechanisms that regulate the production and maintenance of HSCs, the production of blood cells by HSCs (hematopoiesis) and the function of the different types of blood cells.

Studying a variety of neurological diseases of the peripheral and central nervous system using stem cell technology as a primary research tool.

Combining advances in gene therapy, global genetics and epigenetics, and stem cell research to identify pathological molecular mechanisms that can lead to new advanced therapies for specific eye diseases.

Studying how the intestinal epithelium functions in healthy individuals and those suffering from both inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and very early-onset IBD.

Using stem cell models to investigate the mechanisms of cardiovascular disease, identifying novel strategies against heart disease, and collaborating with scientists and clinicians in the Smidt Heart Institute.

Developing stem cell-based regeneration approaches for treating hepatitis C and developing treatments for diabetes mellitus.

Using lung stem cells to identify critical determinants of lung epithelial maintenance, renewal and remodeling that can lead to more effective therapies for lung diseases.

Developing, refining and translating novel orthobiologic therapies for musculoskeletal disorders.

Developing stem cell therapies and technologies for skeletal disorders due to trauma or degeneration.
