First-Year Fellows


Pooja Desai, MD

Medical School: University of California, Riverside
Residency: UCLA
Favorite Aspect of the Program: High clinical acuity, unmatched procedural volume and the “learn by doing” mentality. The attendings, my co-fellows, nurses and staff push me to be the best doctor possible—while sharing a lot of laughs.
Hobbies: Finding new running routes, eating and adjudicating Los Angeles ice cream, baking, spending time with my fiancé, family and two cats (Scoop and River).

Hans Gao, MD

Favorite Aspect of the Program: Clinical volume and sheer breadth and depth of cases. Everyone is so friendly and collegial, making work something I look forward to.
Hobbies: Hiking, Euro-style board games, lowbrow literature

Favorite Aspect of the Program: The people! It’s an incredibly collaborative environment from both a clinical and nonclinical perspective. Everyone is so supportive and always willing to help out.

Debbie Teodorescu, MD

Favorite Aspect of the Program: Cedars-Sinai prides itself, with good reason, on the outstanding, world-class, lifesaving, bleeding-edge care that we provide the very sickest patients with cardiovascular disease. The cardiology fellows work closely with enthusiastic and autonomy-supporting faculty to learn and effectively lead teams to manage, make decisions, conduct research, and perform procedures that jointly push the envelope of what is possible.
Hobbies: Healthcare innovation and tinkering, welding, building stuff, sailing, snorkeling, reading historical fiction, hanging out with my co-fellows!

Neil Zhang, MD

Favorite Aspect of the Program: My amazing co-fellows, early exposure to an enormous breadth of cardiology, and incredible faculty who are brilliant and kind.
Hobbies: Spending time with my family, friends and my partner.

Josiah Brown, MD

Favorite Aspect of the Program: Outstanding procedural and clinical volume while being surrounded by expert clinicians and scientists who are invested in your education and success. The program, faculty and medical center treat you with respect and as a colleague from day one.
Hobbies: Rock climbing, downhill skiing, backpacking, paddle boarding and cooking.

Lauren Lee, MD

Residency: McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University
Favorite Aspect of the Program: Diversity and complexity of cardiac diseases we get to manage, high volume of procedures and studies, and the nice, smart, passionate people we get to work with!
Hobbies: Traveling, classical music, discovering new restaurants and hiking trails in LA, and board games.

Jessica Mao, MD

Favorite Aspect of the Program: The variety and volume of clinical cases we are exposed to, the approachability and availability of faculty (many of whom are giants in the field), and the focus on fellow education.
Hobbies: Eating, cooking, baking, running and hiking.

Natasha Cuk, MD

Favorite Aspect of the Program: The exceptional clinical and academic opportunities, learning from master clinicians, my brilliant co-fellows, my research mentors and our patients.
Hobbies: Surfing, water polo and watching TV.

Derek Leong, MD

Residency: Cedars-Sinai
Favorite Aspect of the Program: Hands down the best part of this program is the people, especially all my amazing co-fellows! That's in addition to being mentored and taught by master clinicians and pioneers in the field. The procedural volume and pathology seen here is unparalleled, and we have the opportunity to be involved in all aspects!
Hobbies: Spending time with friends and family, taking my dog on walks and enjoying all that L.A. has to offer!

Shilpa Sharma, MD

Favorite Aspect of the Program: The people! Co-fellows, attendings, nurses, techs ... everyone is so wonderful and supportive. I also love the autonomy, procedural volume and mentorship.
Hobbies: Running, swimming, sports and traveling.

Lily Stern, MD

Favorite Aspect of the Program: My co-fellows! I also love that all the fellows take care of the same patients on different rotations which facilitates more discussion and learning from one another.
Hobbies: I was a singer-songwriter in a former life and still love to sing and play music with friends and family. Being in nature is my reset. I love hiking, running, dancing, yoga, as well as playing tennis and softball.
