Cedars-Sinai Medical Center
The Cedars-Sinai campus encompasses nearly 24 acres and is located at the intersection of the city of Los Angeles and the cities of Beverly Hills and West Hollywood. The facility is an 877-bed hospital that serves the Los Angeles area with a primary service area, comprising some 3.2 million people. Cedars-Sinai is a major teaching hospital affiliated with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. There are currently 310 residents and clinical fellows, including an Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency program that recruits seven residents per year.
Cedars-Sinai houses the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute, one of the largest institutes of its kind in Southern California, which is staffed by more than 400 physicians and scientists who are dedicated to the treatment of adult and pediatric cancer patients. The institute comprises an integrated, multidisciplinary team of medical oncologists, hematologists, surgical oncologists, gynecologic oncologists, radiation oncologists and psychiatrists, as well as other clinical support staff. The Cedars-Sinai Outpatient Cancer Center, part of the Cancer Institute, provides outpatient support seven days a week. This service allows patients flexibility in scheduling their cancer therapy to minimize interruptions in their daily lives.
The fellows work with a team of residents and are responsible for the day-to-day clinical activities of the service. Surgical cases are performed through open approaches as well as through minimally invasive techniques with the robot and advanced laparoscopy. The fellows participate actively during surgical cases as either the primary surgeon or co-surgeon. Fellows attend outpatient clinics and learn the principles of chemotherapy administration and management of its complications and side effects. The fellows participate in weekly tumor boards, pathology conferences and preoperative conferences.
Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center
In 1953, Kaiser Permanente established the Los Angeles Medical Center (LAMC), its largest hospital and medical offices in the Southern California region. The medical center is centrally located on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, at the foot of the Hollywood Hills. More than 550 physicians and 4,500 support staff serve members at the LAMC. A new 400-bed facility opened in 2009 and servers as tertiary care center for Southern California members.
As a teaching institution, the medical center has 19 residency programs involving more than 160 residents and fellows annually including a four-resident-per-year Obstetrics and Gynecology program. More than 2,000 major gynecological operations are performed annually at LAMC.
The fellows help coordinate the day-to-day clinical activities of the service and participate actively during operating room cases as either the primary surgeon or co-surgeon. Fellows are trained in advanced surgical techniques using open, laparoscopic and robotic approaches. The fellows see new referrals, postoperative and returning patients, as well as women receiving radiation and chemotherapy while supervising the residents in clinic.
The service also holds a weekly multidisciplinary patient conference that is organized by the chief resident on service as well as intermittent departmental grand rounds. As part of the rotation the gynecologic oncology fellow has the opportunity to participate in patient care at the Regional Radiation Oncology Center at the LAMC, the largest radiation oncology center on the West Coast, with a comprehensive array of equipment and specialized techniques for internal and external radiation therapy.
