Application Information
The Surgical Critical Care Fellowship Program matches two fellows each year to the clinical program with the possibility of matriculation into the subsequent one-year Acute Care Surgery Fellowship.
Fellowship positions are matched via the Surgical critical care and Acute care surgery Fellowship Application Service (SAFAS).
Eligibility
- Successful completion of USMLE Step 1, Step 2 CS and Step 2 CK.
- Graduation from an accredited U.S. or Canadian medical school, or possession of a valid ECFMG certificate (for international graduates).
- Completion or anticipated completion of an ACGME-accredited general surgery residency program, with corresponding ABS board eligibility or current board certification in general surgery prior to the fellowship start date in August.
- Valid, unrestricted California Medical License—applicants must either hold or will have applied for this license prior to the start of the program (mandatory requirement).
Application
Completed applications must be submitted through the Surgical Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery Fellowship Application Service (SAFAS) by May 4, 2026, for consideration for the 2027–2028 fellowship positions. Applications may be reviewed on a selective basis after the deadline.
The following materials must be submitted through the SAFAS web portal:
- Curriculum vitae (CV)
- Personal statement
- USMLE transcripts or ABSITE scores
- Three letters of recommendation
- SAFAS application form and instructions
