Program Statistics
The Master of Science in Health Systems, under the direction of Brennan Spiegel, MD, MSHS, and Christopher V. Almario, MD, MSHPM, was launched and WASC accredited in 2017. Each year, between 15 and 25 students are admitted to the program. A total of 121 students have been enrolled over the first 5 years of the program. Most students are full-time healthcare professionals, including clinicians, researchers, and administrators. All students have a strong affinity with the healthcare field. Thirty faculty members are affiliated with the 20-month program, which focuses on emerging healthcare fields, including digital health science, big data analytics, performance improvement, and health economics.
Advancements in Health Systems Science
American healthcare is undergoing a striking transformation. Driven by changes in value-based healthcare financing, burgeoning information technologies and advancements in data analytics, healthcare is rapidly evolving in ways that require multidisciplinary expertise.
Because 18% of the United States gross domestic product is dedicated to healthcare, it is vital for healthcare systems to become expert in cost-effective care delivery; there is a science to maximizing the value of healthcare.
The 20-month-long Master of Science in Health Systems (MSHS) curriculum prepares graduates for a successful career in emerging healthcare fields, including study in:
- Digital health science
- Mobile health
- Health technology assessment
- Big-data analytics
- Performance improvement
- Health economics
Where MSHS Graduates Work
MSHS graduates are eligible for a wide variety of employment opportunities and are primed to assume leadership, administrative or operational roles earlier than otherwise possible. Graduates may develop careers in digital health science, healthcare administration, program evaluation, health information technology and applied health economics, among other areas.
