Hasan Lab
The Hasan Laboratory, led by Wohaib Hasan, PhD, is studying thrombosis within the cardiac chambers of the heart, in both human tissue from heart failure patients and animal models. Thrombi in cardiac chambers can form through disruptions in blood flow and endothelial function. To understand this process, the Hasan Lab is investigating endothelial anticoagulant pathways, as well as nerve-endothelial interactions, as potential therapeutic approaches for reducing thrombosis risk. In addition to these projects, the Hasan Laboratory also studies the origins of cardiac arrhythmias in obese subjects. The higher risk of arrhythmias in obese subjects may be a consequence of aberrant cardiac neuronal remodeling.
The Hasan Laboratory is affiliated with the Cedars-Sinai Pathology and Laboratory Medicine department, Smidt Heart Institute and Department of Biomedical Sciences.
Personal Statement
My doctoral and initial postdoctoral experiences were in the field of autonomic innervation to sweat glands and skin in pathological states. These studies, under the tutelage of Timothy Cowen, PhD, at Royal Free Hospital during my graduate studies, and Peter Smith, PhD, at University of Kansas during my postdoctoral studies, resulted in 16 published papers.
Wohaib Hasan, MS, PhD
Thromboembolic complications are a significant cause of morality and re-hospitalization in heart failure patients. One potential source of thrombi is the endocardial endothelial surface of the heart. The Hasan Lab is interested in understanding how nerve-endothelial interactions are dysregulated in heart failure, resulting in a compromised endothelium and increased propensity for thrombus formation.
