Whitlock Lab
The Whitlock Laboratory, directed by Dr. Patrick W. Whitlock, develops next-generation biomaterials and regenerative therapies for orthopedic disease. Our team engineers injectable hydrogels, biphasic scaffolds and 3D-printed nanocomposite constructs to repair damage to the osteochondral joint and restore joint function in adolescents and adults.
Personal Statement
Our goal is to advance biologic and tissue-engineered therapies that restore joint function and delay or prevent degenerative arthritis in adolescents and young patients.
Patrick Whitlock, MD, PhD
Breakthrough Research
Our lab has developed biomimetic biphasic scaffolds for the repair of osteochondral defects and is developing bioinks and injectable hydrogels to regenerate bone and cartilage for the treatment of avascular osteonecrosis.
Patents
Our lab holds multiple U.S. and international patents on tissue-engineered scaffolds, including a recent provisional patent on cartilage-derived microsphere scaffolds.
Funded Research
Our research is supported by federal, foundation and institutional grants, including funding from POSNA, MTF Biologics and multi-institutional collaborations such as the ANCHOR Study Group.
Publications
Our team has published over 60 peer-reviewed studies in the areas of musculoskeletal tissue engineering, orthopedic biomaterials and hip preservation surgery.
Laboratory Team
Meet the physician-scientists, postdoctoral fellows and staff advancing orthopedic regenerative medicine in the Whitlock Lab.
Job Opportunities
We are recruiting postdoctoral fellows and research staff to advance orthopedic biomaterials and regenerative medicine research.
Collaborations
The Whitlock Lab collaborates with investigators across Cedars-Sinai and partner institutions worldwide to advance regenerative orthopedics and clinical orthopedic surgery.
